Religious Freedom
The working group on religious freedom is working on concrete measures that must be taken to secure the religious freedom rights of all religions in the US. Furthermore, it works on the scope and limit of religious freedom arguments in the context of discrimination, protection of human rights, and health care rights.
The mission statement of the Group emphasizes the connection between the two goals.
1. The working group will strive to clarify political, legal, and ethical issues related to concepts of religious freedom. It aims to raise awareness about the implications of the ‘religious freedom’ argument to promote social justice.
2. It will further monitor and inform the campus community of developments that impact particular communities and groups on the basis of their religious identity or their being perceived as threatening to specific forms of Christianity, for example, the rights of Muslims or of LGBTQ individuals.
With the new administration, specific activities or legislative initiatives such as the state-based Religious Freedom Restoration Acts and the First Amendment Defense Act bill will need to be scrutinized.
